We return to the 1944 campsite area of the Australian Army’s 9th Division, 20th Brigade. This particular area was the encampment of the 2nd/13th (the “Devils Own”) Infantry Battalion following its return from North Africa in 1943. As part of the 9th Australian Division in the Middle East it had been involved in the famous defence of Tobruk (the “Rats of Tobruk”) in addition to the Battle of El Alamein against Rommel’s Afrika Korps. Following jungle training in Australia, the unit re-deployed to New Guinea in addition to Borneo in addition to its Pacific Battle Honours include Milne Bay, Lae, Finschhaven & Brunei (Lutong).
